When The Dude is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, the ultimate LA millionaire, he becomes involved in a kidnapping and ransom of which he knows nothing about.
A sequence of events unfolds in which thugs pee on The Dude’s favourite rug (not just any rug, a rug which ties the room together), a briefcase full of dirty underwear is thrown from The Dude’s car and a severed toe with green nail polish turns up in the mail.
Starring much younger versions of John Goodman (O Brother, Where Art Thou) as Walter, Steve Buscemi (Monsters, Inc.) as Donny and Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) as Maude Lebowski, the film has achieved cult status over the years as it has been noted for its idiosyncharatic characters, dream sequences, unconventional dialogue and that famous soundtrack.
More than just a cult film, The Big Lebowski has inspired a cult way of life and a devoted following of similarly laid back folk. The annual Lebowski Fest began in Kentucky, USA before expanding to several other cities including London where it is known as The Dude Abides Fest. Also, an online religion called ‘Dudism’, devoted to spreading the philosophy and lifestyle of The Dude has now ordained 50,000 ‘Dudeist Priests’ all over the world.
