The 56-year-old actress picked up a record-breaking sixth consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series statuette for her role as Selina Meyer in the political satire at the annual ceremony and spoke of her love of the show as she took to the stage at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre.

She said: "This is and continues to be the role of a lifetime and an adventure of utter joy. Thank you so, so much."

The upcoming seventh season of the show will be its last, and Julia promised it will be as "great" as ever - though she joked one planned plot had to be ditched because of the current political climate in the US, which has controversial president Donald Trump at the helm.

She quipped: "We have a great final season that we're about to start filming.

"A lot of surprises that our fabulous writers have cooked up. We did have a whole storyline about an impeachment but we did abandon that because we were worried that someone else might get to it first."

Julia wasn't the only winner to use the stage to speak out about Trump, and she thinks that was only natural.

She told 'Entertainment Tonight': "It's a pretty hot topic right now, wouldn't you say? It's really all anybody's talking about or thinking about."

And showrunner Dave Mandel hinted the final season will make clear comparisons to the recent elections, when Julia's alter ego goes head-to-head for the presidency against Timothy Simons' Jonah Ryan.

He said: "Well, Selina and Jonah have both decided they want to be President of the United States, and I think what we've seen throughout history is, just because you want to be President of the United States, doesn't mean America wants you to be the President of the United States.

"And that sometimes, maybe the last person you think should be President of the United States somehow kind of wins, when you thought the lady was going to win."

However, he quickly added that Jonah won't necessarily take office.
