The 24-year-old model - whose mother was born and raise in the Netherlands before moving to the United States in 1994 - was delighted after her mum cast her vote in the 2020 election.

Sharing photos of them both wearing face masks at the polling station, Bella wrote on Instagram: "Took my mama to vote for the first time today!!!

"She became an American citizen just recently and this year she was so determined to get out and vote.

"I am so proud of her!!! Wearing our best Blues!!!!! (sic)"

Meanwhile, British star John Oliver - who hosts 'Last Week Tonight' in the US - has also voted for the first time this week after becoming an American citizen in December.

Speaking to Stephen Colbert, he said: "It was amazing … as an immigrant who got his US citizenship in December of last year, I was waiting for that to feel real.

“You worry about your immigration status all the time. And even getting your passport doesn’t feel real because you haven’t tested it against a system.”

The 43-year-old talk show host was overcome by emotions and almost broke down in tears the moment his vote was cast, although he "didn't feel it" right away.

He explained: “Standing in line (to vote) … I didn’t feel it. Giving my name and getting the ballot, I didn’t feel it.

"Scanning it into the machine and the machine saying ‘your vote has been counted’ — I nearly burst into tears.

“That is the truth. My eyes got misty, and I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can cry in a voting station.’”

Meanwhile, Selena Gomez, 28, has been vocal about the importance of voting after admitting she didn’t get the chance to vote in the previous election because she was dealing with “a lot of mental health issues”.

She previously shared: "I can be brutally honest. I was dealing with a lot of mental health issues and I didn't get the opportunity to vote.

"That was really difficult for me, but that actually put a fire under me to be more active than I've ever been, and to never miss a beat and to make sure I take time to do that.

"So as hard as that is to admit, it's something that I've learned a huge lesson with.”
