CELEBRITIES COME OUT IN FORCE TO SUPPORT THE TROOPS
Miranda Hart, Paul O’Grady and Fern Britton all lend their support to SSAFA Forces Help Big Brew Up campaign, raising money for the Armed Forces
The cream of British talent - Miranda Hart, Paul O’ Grady and Fern Britton - have come out in force to lend their names in support of a charity campaign which aims to raise money for the Armed Forces. The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA)
The Big Brew Up campaign takes place 3rd - 9th October, where we ask the whole country and overseas operations to organise tea parties, raising vital funds for the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
With so many servicemen and women currently on active service, the Big Brew Up has captured the country’s imagination. Last year a Big Brew Up was held in nearly every British military base - from Camp Bastion to Catterick. All money raised from the campaign will be used to support serving and ex-service men and women and also their families.
Miranda Hart, whose father served in the Navy said: "The Big Brew Up sounds like ‘such fun’ for a brilliant cause in SSAFA Forces Help. So get brewing and cake eating and if anyone needs a cake taster, I am very willing to offer my services! Seriously, you’ll be raising money for an important charity helping members of the Armed Forces and their families. Thank you."
Chat show host Paul O’Grady commented: "We dunk our biscuits in it, drink gallons of the stuff at work and feel disgruntled if we are not offered a brew within minutes of entering a friend’s house. Tea we love it! Let’s drink our tea for a good cause and raise a cuppa for our Armed Forces during SSAFA’s Big Brew Up week in October. I know I will!"
Forces supporter and TV personality Fern Britton added: "The work our Armed Forces do, both at home and overseas, deserves the recognition and support of everyone I support them whole heartedly. Their jobs are so demanding and we should all thank them for the sacrifices they make for us. You can either host your own Big Brew Up event or attend one in your local neighbourhood. I can’t think of a better reason to toast the troops and say thank you!"
SSAFA Forces mainly focus their help on families, providing assisted housing of injured service personnel at our Norton Homes, support groups, a confidential support line and also though our national network of 96 branches in the UK and on military bases.
Shelley Cooper, mother of Kingsman Anthony Cooper, stayed at SSAFA Forces Help’s Norton House after her son was badly injured by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. She describes her experience saying: "We were welcomed in like you would welcome in your gran. Being there with other families who are also going through the same thing made me feel cocooned in a protective bubble. I don’t think I could have coped without them. For Anthony to know that we’ve been looked after gives him what he needs to keep going. If it wasn’t for the help we receive from charities, I’d be struggling."
