'Because I am a Girl' Campaign
The Girl Summit 2014 takes place in London today and will rally a global movement to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and early and forced marriage (EFM) within a generation.
It is a chance to stand up for every girl's right to a life free from violence, to give girls around the world the freedom to fulfil their potential.
The idea is to bring together women, girls and community leaders from the UK and other countries, alongside governments, international non-governmental organisations like Plan and representatives from the private sector to agree action.
Plan UK's Campaign 'Because I am a Girl'Children’s charity Plan UK is calling for the practice to be eradicated as part of its flagship ‘Because I am a Girl’ work.
The charity vowed to act as research reveals 125 million girls and women are living with the consequences of being cut.
Plan UK’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign has reached 58 million girls worldwide to date, including work to eradicate FGM and child marriage.
Though illegal in the UK and many other countries, a number of complex cultural and social reasons mean FGM is still practiced, such as a belief it protects chastity.
Plan's projects in Africa and Asia have shown that having knowledge of the harmful impact of FGM, as well as understanding how it is linked to discrimination against women and girls, can help end it.
End FGM in a generationThe multi-media campaign by Plan includes a striking video shot by agency Marmalade Film & Media featuring a red rose being cut with a pair of scissors.
Support for the campaign and video has been forthcoming from girls’ rights activists and advocates.
