Ever wanted to be a real life superhero? Well Purple Reign is living the dream and is dominating a typically male profession.
She spoke to us about working with Huawei, overcoming domestic violence and setting up her own campaign to help others.
You’re working with Huawei to launch the world’s fastest ever smartphone, can you tell us a little about that?
I'm very excited to be back in the UK, a lot of my family live here. Huawei invited us to be involved in the Superpowers Symposium which is an event opening today on Bethnal Green Road. It is a unique event designed to celebrate the superhuman qualities of their latest phone – the Huawei Ascend P2, which is the world’s fastest smartphone – perfect for a Real Life Superhero!
What was it that inspired you to become a real life superhero?
As a survivor of domestic violence, I use my 'superhero persona' to raise awareness about this cause. It is my dream to inspire victims and to give them the resources and strength to transform into survivors as a hero once did for me. I also want to inspire regular people that they can be a hero and STOP minding their own business by getting involved when they see abuse.
What is it about helping people that you like?
Coming out of a Domestic Violence relationship, no one had informed me that it wasn't normal or there was anything I could do about it. From my own experience, I wanted to make a difference and let other victims of Domestic Violence there was support out there - I wanted to help people.
You’re one of the only female real life superheroes, how do you think that gives you an edge?
I am the only female member of the male dominated Rain City Superhero Movement but that doesn't stop me from hitting the streets to help victims and stop crime. I like to be one of few and hopefully other females will be inspired to do the same.
I’ve studied many forms of martial arts from a young age, and with a professional background in the Health & Fitness Industry, vigorous training helps me stay in peek physical shape, dominating my male counterparts when it comes to physical endurance.
You’ve set up The Purple Reign Campaign, which aims to help victims of domestic abuse, abuse and bullying, tell us a bit more about that.
In addition to my street patrols with RCSM (Rain City Superhero Movement) I founded a non-profit called The Purple Reign Campaign which gives resources to victims of abuse and aims to stop Domestic Violence, Bullying, and Abuse by encouraging 'Everyday Heroes' to STOP minding their own business and Get Involved.
If you had any advice for those thinking about becoming a real life superhero, what would it be?
Follow your heart, if your passionate about a cause and determined to make a change - do it! Others will support and it's not all about the superhero suit.
Lastly, what’s next for you? What’s coming up in the next year?
We host a lot of benefits to raise money and awareness for a number of causes namely Domestic Violence. This year we want to continue raising awareness for bullying in schools, Phoenix joins me in this cause by reaching out to young people, the leaders of the next generation, by speaking at schools about Bullying, encouraging 'heroic' behaviour and standing up for those who need a helping hand.
Real Life Superhero, Purple Reign, is in the UK to launch the world's fastest smartphone – Huawei Ascend P2 – at the Huawei Superpowers Symposium taking place in London today.
