The white dress is the one things that signifies a wedding like no other but as times are changing, so are preferences.
Although older brides are still devoted to the white wedding dress, younger brides are being more experimental and venturing out into other colour choices.
From brides aged 16-24, three quarters are still in favour of a white dress but this is considerably lower than the higher age groups.
Instead, 25 per cent of younger brides are mixing it up and heading for an array of different colours to tie the knot it.
Reds, pinks and blues are becoming more popular with the younger generation but are still being left untouched by the older age groups.
Over half of the men and women surveyed said they associated red with love, with a quarter saying they saw the colour pink representing a first date.
So when it came to choosing colours, what is our biggest influence? Well, women said it was their mother whereas men said it was their sports team that gave them inspiration.
Karen Haller, from Post-It brand 3M who commissioned the research, says, “It’s perhaps not surprising that mums have had a great impact on their daughters. We often take advice from others to be better than our own, as opposed to trusting our own instincts. It’s ironic that we will take this direction from our mother and in turn do the same with our partner!
“We all know what colour tones we are drawn to and those we aren’t, it’s just a matter of trusting our intuition.
“Men will choose their team’s colour as it gives them a sense of belonging. As human beings we have an innate need to belong to a tribe. In essence, they are creating an emotional connection through colour.”
