Out of their total budget 20% - the equivalent of £3,111 - went towards planning the trip of a lifetime, an increase of 12% on the previous year.

The survey, by hitched.co.uk, found the majority of newly weds jet off to Europe, the Mediterranean or Eastern Europe for their honeymoon retreat; with romantic beach getaways being the most popular choice with nearly 40% of the vote for the fourth year running.
