Langley Castle, the only medieval fortified castle hotel in England, has a compelling new proposal for brides and grooms seeking a breathtaking wedding day - Game of Thrones inspired weddings.
The Northumberland-based hotel, is weaving its 667 years of history into its wedding offering to provide what is believed to be the first Game of Thrones based wedding experience in the UK, if not the world.
To inspire brides and grooms, Langley has created a portfolio of stunning imagery in conjunction with talented photographer, Sean Elliott, highlighting the possibilities available at the authentic castle. The photography highlights exactly where Game of Thrones-style backdrops can be found at Langley, whether that be on the battlements, in the gardens and woodland, in the ancient arched doorways, on the window seats set into its seven-foot-thick walls, or in its amazing medieval drawing room, complete with ancient leaded windows, dramatic and sweeping velvet curtains, chandeliers and knights in shining armour.
Here, the couple will also be able to sit regally on ‘throne’ chairs as they take their vows, perhaps incorporating into these the line from the TV drama, “I am hers and she is mine. From this day until the end of my days.”
Langley has also put together suggestions of what a couple may wish to have within their Northern Kingdom wedding package. This includes delivery of the wedding ring by hawk, dramatic dragon-themed wedding cakes, arrival on horseback and candles dancing on a medieval themed banqueting table.
A brochure has been produced to guide couples through the process and offer a few prompts, but the wedding day will be truly bespoke. Whilst the suggested attire will be a medieval maiden dress, with or without faux fur shrug, and a warrior costume for grooms, perhaps complete with sword, how couples choose to bring their dream wedding alive will be very much down to them. Their wishes will be taken on board by the Langley wedding planning team and brought to life before their guests’ eyes.
Couples will be able to select their own dishes or choose from a specially created Game of Thrones inspired menu, devised by Langley’s head chef, Mark Percival, a former North East Chef of the Year. This menu features dishes such as Mother of Dragons Spicy Chicken Wings as a starter and Wildlings Wild Mushroom Tartlet and Theons Devilled Sausages for mains, complete with side dishes including Jon Snow peas and the Red Woman’s beetroot and walnut salad. The meal can even be completed with ‘The Wall’ – a tower of profiteroles.
Whilst authenticity is delivered by virtue of Langley’s status as the only medieval fortified castle hotel in England, and owner of probably the best example of medieval garderobes (ancient loos) in Europe, these weddings will also take place in Langley-on-Tyne, just a short distance from Hadrian’s Wall. This is the UNESCO World Heritage site landmark that inspired ‘The Wall’ in Game of Thrones. In fact, it is said that stones from Hadrian’s Wall were used to construct the fortified castle.
The aim is to attract brides and grooms from across the UK, along with couples from overseas. This new style of wedding will sit alongside the fairy-tale weddings with which Langley Castle has long been associated and the message from Langley is to get in early, if you wish to steal a march on your friends by being the first in your social circle to stage this amazing extravaganza.
The good news for those not getting married is that Langley can be hired on an exclusive-use basis, for anyone wishing to have a Game of Thrones-inspired stay with family or friends, and corporate events, including bushcraft and firelighting, can also be arranged.
Langley’s general manager, Eric Kortenbach, says: “When we looked at Langley’s incredible, historic interior, its battlements and its grounds, and compared these to scenes from A Game of Thrones, we realised there could not be a better place in which to create a Northern Kingdom experience. Langley has been on the landscape since 1350 and provides the perfect backdrop for this bespoke wedding option. It also just happens to be in the very location that inspired author George R. R. Martin. What more could avid viewers of this mega-series desire?”
