More and more couples are opting for more adventurous honeymoons according to a recent survey conducted by travel company Kuoni and Jemma Purvis tells us why.

Why is the traditional romantic beach holiday becoming a thing of the past?

I wouldn’t say it’s becoming a thing of the past, couples still want that romantic beach ideal but we are seeing honeymooners becoming more adventurous, heading off on safari, touring the Golden Triangle in India, exploring Latin America or visiting the romantic cities of Italy for example.  Some are combining adventure with beach and embarking on twin centres so that they get the best of both worlds.  We are seeing them leaning towards a more active, cultural and authentic experience when on honeymoon.

What is the appeal of doing something adrenaline fuelled on your honeymoon?

I suppose the appeal is doing something different and exciting that you will remember for a lifetime.  In our survey one in ten people would like the thrill of a bungee jump on their romantic getaway - you wouldn’t forget that in a hurry!

Why do a lot of people fulfil their wish list while they are on their honeymoon?

To make it extra special and memorable.

Why are Italy and Vietnam so popular for new couples and where else appeals for honeymoon destinations?

People are no longer content with a week or two lounging around by the beach or pool, instead newly married couples are hoping for a bit of adventure, they want to learn more about the country they are visiting and return home with tales of the amazing things they have seen and done. Destinations such as Vietnam and Italy provide this.

Why are people more willing to travel for longer on their honeymoon?

It could be a variety of things. Airlines are flying to more destinations making them more accessible and affordable.  We are seeing a growth in Maxi-moons - a generation of couples that want to take more time out than the standard 14 nights - four weeks to travel to Australia or the US for example and travel around to see and do as much as they can.  And destinations that are further away are also good for winter sun – so if you get married in winter months, you get better weather further afield.

Why is it important to still embrace the romance?

According to the survey romance it is still a very important factor of the honeymoon with Brits wanting 5 romantic beach strolls, 4 candle lit meals and 3 spa treatments as a couple.

Why is soaking up the rays still an important pursuit on your honeymoon?

A tan always looks good in a picture!  And generally when you think about having a holiday you imagine sunshine.

Couples still want some me time on their honeymoon, is this healthy when they are just married?

I don’t see why not, we all need some ‘me time’ every now and then.  Some may argue that it might be a healthy thing to do when on honeymoon or on a holiday and can give you more to talk about.  Many people read whilst on holiday, this could be classed as me time.

Why is it important to stay in touch with your friends and family while you are away?

This is down to personal preference and according to the survey it is still an important thing to do whilst on holiday with one in ten people saying they would probably contact friends from their honeymoon, a sixth want to be able to check social media and 12 per cent would like to ring home to mum.

Why do couples often try to recreate their honeymoon on anniversaries or zero birthdays?

People like to re-create their favourite memories and interestingly in the survey, a fifth of people have friends or relatives who have tried to recreate their honeymoon all over again – by visiting the same destination, embarking on the same activities, eating in the same restaurants and sight-seeing in the same places.

What are the most sought after activities to do on honeymoons?

According to the survey some of the top honeymoon activities include: swimming with dolphins, snorkelling, hiking/trekking, scuba diving, cycling and surprisingly swimming with sharks.

What other traditional activities are still important?

The survey shows that traditional activities such as beach strolls, candle lit meals, spa treatments as a couple and sightseeing are still important.
