Why is the wedding dress such an important part of the wedding day?
Firstly a girl wants to feel at her most special on her wedding day so the dress must be perfect for her. A bride wants to feel at her best and look the best she has possibly ever looked. Another factor is you’ll be looking at your wedding photographs 50 years from now and so will all your family so there are so many factors that make a wedding dress such an important part of your special day.
How important is it that other parts of the wedding day such as the flowers compliment the wedding dress?
Gone are the days where everything has to match perfectly, a Charlotte Balbier bride is confident and daring in both her wedding dress style and style of wedding. Whether you’re a relaxed boho bride whose bouquet choice is wild hand-picked rural flowers to your city fashion forward bride who keeps in minimalist and chic. Some brides like a theme and some like to keep it eclectic, it’s a personal style and choice and both are gorgeous.
What are the biggest dos and don’ts when shopping for a wedding dress?
Listen to the stylist who is styling you in the boutique, they are experts and know what will work for your body shape. They may suggest a gown that you would not usually try and it could be ‘the one’. Keep an open mind as you could be surprised! Also wear good underwear for your bridal boutique appointments, a good fitting bra and knickers and a smooth fabric and nude shade are essential.
Who are the best people to take with you while shopping?
It’s best to take someone you really trust and value their opinion! Someone who is going to be honest with your dress choice and add a bit of practicality to your thought process! I have a very close relationship with my mother Amanda Wyatt who is a famous renowned bridal designer herself so of course her opinion was the most important thing for me. I always advise only take one person with you as you only need one friend or family member and the stylist in the boutique.
Why do brides and people with them get so emotional when trying on wedding dresses?
I think trying on a wedding dress for the 1st time is very overwhelming as it’s a totally new experience; it’s not every day we get to try on wedding gowns. Combined with the fact it’s for the most special day of your life to someone you love it can all become very emotional.
Why is it important for you to give your honest opinion about a dress if it doesn’t suit the bride to be?
I’ve been in the bridal industry a long time so I have an eye for what will work on a bride and the type of shapes which will suit her! I always love for the brides to look her best. If I feel they’d look better in one style then I would advise the bride to try on some alternative gowns also. I want to ensure that every Charlotte Balbier bride feels and looks amazing.
What is the most rewarding thing for you about working in the wedding industry?
As a bridal designer you are part of one of the biggest days of a girl’s life! So it’s a rewarding job making brides feel special and happy. I am a big social networker on Twitter and Facebook with all my brides. I am one of the only bridal designers who have such a personal connection with my brides and I am personally in touch with a great number of them! I listen to all the feedback they give me on my designs and being so close with my brides makes the job even more rewarding!
Do you attend the weddings of the people whom you have designed dresses for or do they send you pictures of the big day?
I’d love to attend all the weddings but I don’t think there would be enough weekends in the year to see all my brides! We do love brides sending us in photographs of themselves though. We put them on our website and also our Facebook pages! Showing our brides in their beautiful dresses is one of the things Charlotte Balbier prides itself on!
Even if it looks beautiful why is it important to be comfortable in your wedding dress?
You need to be comfortable in your gown for sure! You are going to be on show all day and networking with your guests. The dress needs to be nicely fitted so the bride is comfortable for all her photographs, eating and especially dancing at the end of the night!
What is next for you?
We’re always on the go here at Charlotte Balbier! We’ve got tones of exciting stuff in the pipeline! I am in the process of launching an evening wear collection. We’re also looking to launch in the US and will be making big plans to expand out there…. Watch this space!!
