It seems that this couple have the movies to thank for bringing them together.
Hanks married actress Wilson in 1988 after they met on the set of his TV show Bosom Buddies when she guest starred as Peter Scolari's Satan worshipping girlfriend. They did not become romantically involved, however until the film in which they co-starred together; Volunteers came under production in 1985.
Hanks married Wilson at Saint Sophia's Church, converting from Roman Catholicism to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Hanks said, "I must say that when I go to church-and I do go to church-I ponder the mystery. I meditate on the 'why?' of 'why people are as they are' and 'why bad things happen to good people,' and 'why good things happen to bad people'... The mystery is what I think it is, almost, the grand unifying theory of mankind." (Wikipedia)
The couple have two sons together Chet (1990) and Truman (1995) and have just become grandparents. Wilson is step mother for Hanks' children Colin and Elizabeth Ann from his first marriage to actress Samantha Lewes.
Their movie co-starring continued after they got married as you can see them more recently in Larry Crowne and from years gone by in Sleepless in Seattle.
They also worked together on My Big Fat Greek Wedding as Wilson apparently persuaded Hanks to set up the film at this company, Playtone, who promoted it to financiers and distributors. With both Wilson and Hanks' backing it became one of the biggest money making independent films of all time.
Hanks was once quoted saying, 'It's just as hard . . . staying happily married as it is doing movies. ' (IMDB) But whatever their secret is- it's working because this pair is one of the longest standing couples in Hollywood.
Happy Anniversary Tom and Rita!
