The pair lived together for 2 years before they got married at the Grand Ballroom and The Plaza Hotel in New York City on the 18 thMarch 1993. They left their wedding in style to Whitney Houston's 'I'm Every Woman' playing in the background.
Mitchell's wedding dress was made of white silk and satin, low cut and off the shoulder and featured French Alencon lace and rosettes. She had a 12 foot train and her Cathedral tulle veil was edged in Belgian embroidery and embellished with Austrian Pearls and crystals.
Mitchell walked down the aisle to 'Don't Give Up On Love', which Murphy had performed on his 'Love's Alright' album.
The ceremony only took 16 minutes and when the minster asked if anyone objected to the marriage- Murphy apparently turned to the crowd and glared at them all which caused much laughter amongst the congregation.
The celebrated their first anniversary in Montego Bay in Jamaica for one week.
They have five children together; Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola and Bella. Bria was born before they got married and was a flower girl at their ceremony.
Sadly, in 2005, Mitchell filed for divorced citing 'irreconcilable differences' and it was all finalised on 17th April 2006.
