Four things we learnt about love from the Royal Wedding

On Saturday 18th May, millions of people across the world tuned in to watch Prince Harry marry Meghan Markle. Arguably the most modern royal wedding to date, the public watched excitedly as the ceremony unfolded and delivered personality along the way. It was particularly these unique touches, clearly chosen by the couple as a reflection of their interests, that has drawn so much attention. From a gospel choir to the song which was played at Princess Diana’s funeral, the royal wedding was about Harry and Megan’s own journey.

As soon as Meghan was first pictured with Harry, their love story has captured the hearts of millions. The unlikely couple had people speculating about how they met and excitement grew that Harry was to marry a ‘normal’ person.

The media attention that their relationship has received has also taught many a lot about love and the expectations that often come with it. From the importance of a simple date night and realising the sincerest moments can happen in the comfort of your own home (Harry proposed while the couple were roasting a chicken) to being completely at ease with one another, many young people have been inspired.

It’s personal, however big the show surrounding it

Despite the huge crowds, large ceremony and a church full of guests, speakers and choirs, intimate moments shared between Megan and Harry were the greatest demonstrations of love. The words they said to each other at the alter that no one could hear and the glances they shared showed everyone watching how in love they are and how they managed to share personal moments amongst everything else. The touches they made to make the wedding differ to previous royal weddings also shows the importance of doing things that are personal to you as a couple.

You can overcome what other people say about your relationship

Whenever we embark on a new relationship, someone will have something to say about it. Many people are familiar with difficult in-laws or reservations from friends if we start seeing someone they are unsure about or don’t know. Harry and Meghan experienced this to an extreme extent, with almost everyone in the country having an opinion on their relationship. However, remaining true to each other and being confident that they had found the right person meant that the media attention they received didn’t stop them from enjoying a perfect wedding day. If you’re happy and are confident that your partner is the right person for you, it really doesn’t matter what anyone says about it.

It’s unpredictable

It’s unlikely that when a teenage Meghan posed for a photo outside Buckingham Palace, she ever imagined she would one day marry the Prince. Harry and Meghan have proved that love is unpredictable and you never know when you will find the right person for you. Many people in Meghan’s position might worry they won’t meet anyone again (she has been married previously), but their wedding showed that divorce and heartbreak can be overcome and you never know who you’ll meet next!

Nothing ever runs smoothly

As soon as it was announced that Meghan’s father wouldn’t attend the wedding, it made national news. The fact that her only family member attending was her mother also attracted a lot of opinions. However, it also welcomed solidarity from the hundreds of people whose wedding plans change at the last minute. Having family difficulties is not uncommon, yet it is something that people often worry about ruining their wedding day. Meghan and her mother showed us that nothing ever runs smoothly, but that you can still enjoy a day with those closest to you.
