Dancer Sylvie Guillem has collaborated with PETA in a new video encouraging people to switch to a vegan lifestyle this January.

The video features Guillem stretching and dancing, while she explains why she went vegan five years ago and why it’s important to her to encourage others to do the same.

"Animals feel pain and love and joy, just as humans" do, she explains. “But in the industrialised meat, dairy, and egg industries, animals are denied everything that's natural and important to them. Some of them don't even feel the fresh air", she says. "They don't see the light."

Guillem reminds us that going vegan is one big step to helping to reduce animal suffering. "A drop of water can't stop a fire alone", she says. "But a drop of water, plus another one, plus another one, then you have the rain, and the rain can stop the fire."

A vegan lifestyle can also help to reduce your risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and obesity- health risks a lot of meat-eaters face because of their diet.

Plant-based meals are greener, too, because the meat industry is a major producer of the greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to eat" – offers a

"Go Vegan in the New Year " pledge site, where anyone who wants to try eating plant-based meals for 30 days can sign up to receive daily recipes, tips on eating out, and more.

Guillem joins others celebrities including Vivienne Westwood, Alicia Silverstone, Paul McCartney, and many more – who have teamed up with PETA to promote healthy and humane meat-free meals.
