The first thing to note about this product is how thick it is. Forget your normal yoghurts- this has some body to it- much thicker than cream so be mindful that you might need to stir it a little more than your conventional milk based variety.

Alpro Go On Plain

Alpro Go On Plain

I decided to use it as a creamy addition to the sauce for my pasta as I’m a sucker for big piles of the crabs at dinnertime. I boiled up the pasta as normal, used a jar of readymade red pesto, chopped up some red peppers (I like the colours of my food to be consistent) and mixed in the Alpro to give it a creamier taste. It was a great feeling to enjoy a rich pasta dish without the guilt.

I also found it worked quite well with fruit- I simply left some frozen fruit to defrost overnight in the fridge, drained it then swirled in some yoghurt with a tablespoon of choc shot so I was left with a creamy black forest gateau type brekkie. YUM.

This plant based alternative to strained yogurt is as the name suggests- plain- it needs something to give it flavour- on its own it’s fairly tasteless- so it forces you to get creative in the kitchen- just without the annoyance of it taking all night.

You can pop it in soups, make it into a dip or use it as I did- to thicken up your pasta sauce. What I would say is- to add this in at the end for anything hot you are using it for. Swirl it into your soup once it’s boiled, add it to your pasta sauce once the other ingredients have softened and you are just about ready to plate it up. I made the mistake of popping it into the dish at the beginning and it separated which left the sauce a little grainy. So to enjoy it at its best- use it as you would a sour cream and run it through close to serving to enjoy it to the fullest.

Alpro Go On is great if you are trying to follow a low carb vegan diet as it has 6g of protein per 100g and only 2.5g of carbohydrate so you can still have a protein packed meal without the carbs which can be quite tricky as many sources of protein come in the from of beans.

You could use courgetti instead of pasta for a low carb evening meal and low carb fruits like berries to satisfy your sweet cravings in the morning.

The other big selling point is that it only contains 71 calories per 100g so if you still want to eat your carbonara but for far less calories than cream- this could be your answer.

Overall- I feel this is something I need to play around with a little more to see what else I can rustle up. One thing’s for sure though, whether you’re craving sweet or savoury- it’s a very versatile product to have in your fridge.
