British pie hard fans can delight - iconic brand Fray Bentos has won the PETA Vegan Pie of The Year Award for their new Vegan Steak & Kidney Bean Pie.
The much treasured brand - recently given the royal seal of approval after it emerged the Queen prefers to tuck into Fray Bentos pies during in-flight meals - has created a brand new meat-free alternative which combines juicy kidney beans with succulent vegan steak.
All this hard work has paid off as it has resulted in a win at the PETA Vegan Food Awards 2019.
Now in its seventh year the Vegan Food Awards celebrates some of the hottest new vegan products in the UK, the growing variety and availability of vegan specialty products, and recognises the companies which are delivering for this growing customer group.
The limited edition pie - a delicious vegan twist on the classic steak pie - will be available from late December - perfect for vegans looking for a festive treat or a delicious indulgence this Veganuary.
This is Fray Bentos’ third foray into meat-free pies following hot on the heels of their vegan friendly Vegetable Balti pie and Vegetarian Cheese and Onion pie, which were both launched earlier this year and have seen sales spike for the much-loved British pie brand.
Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, PETA, said: "PETA was delighted that an iconic brand like Fray Bentos has brought this innovative vegan steak and kidney bean pie to the table. We're confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans and flexitarians around the UK, which is why it's our 2019 Vegan Food Award winner for Best Vegan Pie. Stock up for the apocalypse!"
Lorraine Rothwell said: “Statistics show around one in eight of us are veggie or vegan, and when added to flexitarian stats it means there is a third of the population that are choosing to either reduce or remove meat from their diets.
“We have been keeping an eye on the outside world rather than just our sector in the market and that’s why we felt this year was the right time to break into the vegan market, with not one but two vegan offerings.
“So of course we are thrilled not only that people are enjoying them but also with the recognition from PETA - it’s a real triumph for us. We’re keen to have a slice of the action and are confident our new vegan pie is a worthy winner.”
The Fray Bentos Vegan Steak and Kidney Bean Pie launches from late December at a RSP of only £2.
