With the premiere of the landmark 20th series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! right around the corner, we’ve been taking a closer look at the famous faces ready to take part in what should be one of the most memorable seasons of the show to-date.
Taking place in Wales for the first time, from the ever-so-spooky Gwrych Castle, the stars will be battling the cold rather than the heat, and have to take on trials themed to their strange surroundings rather than those we’ve come to expect from the Australian jungle.
One of those taking part this year, is Jordan North. Whilst some may not recognise his face, that distinctive voice is one that has prevalent on BBC Radio 1 for the past six years.
What you should know about Jordan North’s career so far
Born in York, North grew up in Burnley, Lancashire before moving to the Preston area in his teen years. He would go on to become an alumnus of the University of Sunderland, graduating with a First in B. A. in Media Production, after working at Spark FM while at the university.
Before leaving education, in his final year of studying, he entered a competition with Bauer Radio, eventually going on to win a Sunday show on The Hits Radio. His talent was undeniable, and he would go on to work with Preston FM and the in-house radio at Blackpool Pleasure Beach before his star really began to rise.
Following his time at uni, he took on the role of researcher and producer at BBC Radio 5 Live, whilst also presenting on Capital North East and Capital Manchester. This opened a number of doors for North.
Appearing as a freelancer, he covered shows from 2014 on BBC Radio 1, and in early 2018 was announced as the new host for Sunday morning's Greatest Hits show.
Cut to this year, and in September (2020) he was revealed as the new regular 11am-1pm weekend host on BBC Radio 1. He's already having to take some time off however, to travel to Wales for I'm A Celeb!
“I was a bit worried about asking for time off but my bosses have been so supportive," he explained. "They were jumping for joy saying I had to do it when I told them."
He's also the co-presenter of hit podcast Help I Sexted My Boss, which he works on with friend and etiquette expert William Hanson.
Currently in its fifth season, the podcast was nominated at the British Podcast Awards 2020, for Best Entertainment Podcast.
How will Jordan North cope in I’m A Celebrity?
"It's just easier to say what I am not scared of," North admits. "I have so many phobias!”
Despite always appearing "bubbly and energetic" during his Radio 1 shows, the host is looking forward to showing people what he is "really like", explaining that everybody "has down moments too”.
As a single man who says he’s not going on the show looking for love, North says “a nice cool pint of Guinness” is what he’ll miss most when taking part, but says he can’t wait to meet hosting duo Ant and Dec, because he “loved them on SM:TV doing Wonky Donkey!”
Though he's got his fears, he's looking forward to the experience: "With everything going on this year, people will want this show on TV more than anything. We all need it.
“It's my favourite show on the telly and to be part of it is a big honour. My co-presenter at Radio 1, Emily Atack [2018 runner-up], talked so lovingly about it all and you can't turn something like this down.”
Looking ahead to his time on I'm A Celeb, he said: "I just want to have fun and this is something that will stick with you forever. The fact I am going to be doing it doesn't seem real.”
"I have got so many phobias and fears," he concludes. "I am worried I will let people down but I also want to give the trials my best go. I hope Radio 1 listeners will get behind me.”
If the betting odds are anything to go by, they’re already flocking in their droves to support him.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! starts Sunday, November 15th on ITV.
