Insane. That's one word to describe Netflix's latest addition to its original catologue of material in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp. Hilarious is thankfully another.
Attempting to explain the ridiculous scenes we saw play out through the cult movie, FDOC builds itself around the actions of the characters and attempts to go backwards - this is a prequel after all - to explain just why things turned out the way they did.
The audience is meant to be laughing at the show as well as along with it. Watching Amy Poehler continuously ensure people know she's just 16-years-old is great. Bradley Cooper returning despite having achieved some rather heavy superstardom is nostalgic beyond belief. Paul Rudd fresh out of his Ant Man suit looks worse for wear than back in 2001, but it doesn't matter. It all comes together to keep the viewer's smile planted firmly across their face.
We're given origin stories though we never asked for them. We'll find out a little bit more about Christopher Meloni's Vietnam-scarred war veteran Gene and just what makes him tick. We'll see why Andy always gets the girl despite being hugely undeserving.
Callbacks to the movie are ripe and they don't feel overused. You may have heard these jokes before but they're not stale - instead they're inspirational. It's incredible to see just how well the people cracking the jokes have done in their real lives and going back to a time in which they were hoping to make waves just feels like a good thing to do.
What Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp continues to do following on from the movie, is prove why we all should stop taking some television so seriously. We need to sit back, relax and enjoy what's on offer. Amidst all of the blood, fighting, war and tears on TV as of late, this series is one that we can put on in the background or watch intently with the same results - a whole lot of laughs.
Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp is available to watch now on Netflix.
