With success across the globe, FremantleMedia Australia's brilliant female prison drama series Wentworth is the contemporary adaptation of the memorable and iconic Prisoner Cell Block H drama, which ran from 1979 to 1986.
Drawing on characters and elements from the original series within its first two seasons, the third is now set to explode with new provocative and gripping storylines taking place three months on from the events that went down during the season two finale.
Returning to the prison after successfully killing Brayden Holt - the man who killed her daughter - Bea Smith takes up the mantle of Top Dog, and when Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson realises she's been played by the prison's new unofficial leader, the games begin.
Screening in 88 countries across the world and setting a new record in 2013 by becoming the highest rated show ever on Australian Pay TV, the series has now become the number one prime time Australian drama since 2002 and led to adaptations being produced in the Netherlands - with 'Celblok H' - and in Germany - with 'Block B - Unter Arrest'.
Since beginning to broadcast, the drama has secured big awards including an Astra for most outstanding Australian drama for the second year in a row at the 2015 Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association Awards, as well as Danielle Cormack taking home the most outstanding actress prize this year following on from Nicole De Silva's win the year prior.
The series was also awarded a Logie for most outstanding drama series, and Danielle Cormack also took the award for most outstanding actress at the ceremony.
Huge in the UK as well as its homeland, Wentworth's second season last year smashed the Channel 5 prime time average across all key demographics, and looks set to do the same with its third season.
Wentworth Prison returns to Channel 5 at 10pm tonight, July 22 2015.
