The Mindy Project airs tonight on E4 and see America’s newest comedy darling taking on the world of the sitcom with encouraging results.
After massively impressing in the American version of The Office, not only being a part of the cast but of the writing staff too, Kaling was given the reign on her own show, after the success of New Girl and Bridesmaids proved that America was hungry for fresh and original comedy with a few more xx chromosomes in.
With The Mindy Project, Kaling plays an Ob/Gyn doctor called, inventively enough, Mindy, who’s a little too obsessed with romantic comedies and is looking for love. Apart from that would be too easy though without a little bit of oddness mixed in. Be it her kooky friends or her own scattergun mind that can recite lines of dialogue from When Harry Met Sally, Mindy’s life isn’t one that that could be called dull.
Along with Lena Dunham, Mindy Karling is thought by many as a comedian who’ll save us all, but unforntunetly while The Mindy Project is a easily enjoyable show, Kaling can’t match Dunham’s brilliant HBO/Sky Atlantic series.
While it doesn’t feel as naturally funny as New Girl or as insightful as Dunham’s profanity laden show, The Mindy Project is entirely that, a project. If it can capitalise on the best parts of it's potential, then we could be in for something special.
Kaling herself is the best thing about the show. She’s able to imbue the show with enough belief that even the chunkier lines of dialogue can bring fruit when it’s her delivering them. She also has a natural charm that first came through on The Office that just gets hard and harder to extinguish given more room to breathe.
Despite all the issues though, Kaling’s big TV solo gig is still an enjoyable example of the American comedy.
