David Tennant returned to the BBC last night with new legal drama series 'The Escape Artist'.
As junior barrister Will Burton, he's prolific for never losing a case and his latest client Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell) stands accused of a brutal, high-profile murder.
Life at home is great for Burton - excusing the lack of time he gets to spend with his son - with a wife that adores him. The adoration doesn't stop at home - Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo) has been alongside Burton since law school, and can't help but light up a room with the smile he gives her from just a glance in her direction.
Great production and brilliant performances from both Tennant and the sinister Kebbell ensure you're left on the edge of your seat throughout, especially after a rejected handshake that leads to chilling consequences.
There are some holes in the story, but the cast manage to do enough to gloss over them without leaving too much damage.
A highly unsettling and uneasy finish to the first episode should have everybody tuning in next week to see the consequences of Foyle's horrific actions, and the transformation of Tennant's character from smug barrister to haunted, protective father.
A good start to what can be a great series.
'The Escape Artist' continues Tuesday November 5 at 9pm on BBC One.
