The 76-year-old actor - who has played Lou Carpenter in the Australian soap for 27 years - will be scaling back his role on the show, but will continue to film the occasional storyline.

A spokesperson for the Channel 5 show told the Mirror: "Tom has scaled back his workload over the past few years and while he will not be appearing as regularly on 'Neighbours', good news for the many Lou Carpenter fans is the producers have persuaded him to continue to do guest appearances.

"He will be returning later in the year to film a significant storyline."

It is not the first time the star has cut back on his workload on the soap as in 2009, Tom spent two months filming for the show before taking two months off.

'Neighbours' recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a star studded series of episodes that brought back favourites from across the years, including some characters who had passed away on screen, and Stefan Dennis thought it would be a great time to get an on-screen romance, for his character Paul Robinson, having split from his wife Rebecca Napier in 2010.

He previously told BANG Showbiz: "I think it's time for Paul to have another long-term romance, and that's always a good, fun storyline because it takes you everywhere, particularly with a character like Paul and the women he's attracted to. It's all about clash."
