Last night's episode of Emmerdale saw Katie Sugden fall to her death after being shoved by Robert Sugden on EastEnders.
Played by actress Sammy Winward, the character was seen falling through the floor of a barn on Wylie's Farm, plummeting to her death.
Confronting Robert about his love affair with Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller), she was initially messaged by Aaron to let her know he and Robert were meeting up at the farm, allowing her to gain photographic evidence of the cheat, which she planned to show Chrissie White (Louise Marwood).
Hoping to get his lover to admit his true feelings and leave Chrissie at the altar, things went wrong when Robert still revealed he would go ahead with the wedding, forcing Aaron to storm off and leave Robert with Katie.
Desperately trying to convince Aaron that Katie had deleted the photo from the phone - something he did after shoving Katie to her death - viewers were left wondering whether Robert's tale would be completely believed.
Katie's death came as a surprise to viewers, with Danny Miller also expressing his shock at the storyline in a chat with Radio Times magazine.
"Katie has been an integral part of 'Emmerdale'. And I'd imagined that the character would just leave. There was no reason to think that Aaron would be having anything to do with her exit.
"So to find out that I was going to be working so closely with Sammy right at the end of her contract was touching. And even though the scenes were dramatic, we had to keep the filming fun for Sammy."
The actor revealed that Robert is to try and shift the blame of the accident onto Aaron, reminding him it was he who invited her to the farm which resulted in his "mental state" being affected.
"Aaron doesn't deal with guilt very well. And we know that he often ends up hurting himself at times like this. So for Robert to do this is very cruel."
Sammy had previously said of her leaving the soap: "I'm going to miss everyone terribly. I've loved every second of playing Katie, but no one becomes an actor to play just one role, so now it's time for me to move on."
