EastEnders bosses have plans to commemorate the first World War with a special episode.

Bosses on the BBC One soap are keen to mark the 100-year anniversary of the start of the Great War, and scenes will show Dot Branning (June Brown) organise a special memorial service.

She will be assisted by squaddie Lee Carter, the son of Queen Vic landlords Mick and Linda Carter, in putting together the tribute.

And Lee - who is played by Danny-Boy Hatchard - will also make a heartfelt speech at the service in scenes which will air in August.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "The show felt it was important to mark the centenary.

"It is only right that the heroes should be honoured in the show.

"Dot is the perfect character to bring the appropriate level of reverence while Lee adds relevance from his experiences of conflict.

"It should be a really moving episode that fans will love."

Show producers are keen to keep the episode as accurate as possible, so scriptwriters are being advised by real-life soldiers to ensure military protocols are properly observed.

Meanwhile, the soap will ensure it stays topical tonight after a last minute scene was inserted to discuss England's World Cup defeat to Italy at the weekend.
