Having been taken to the police station with Michael, Martha is shocked to find that, for the first time, Jack is playing things by the book; worse still, he’s quick to point out that Michael’s breach of parole may well land him back in prison. After a quick chat with Morag, Martha later returns to the station to plead her boyfriend’s case, claiming all responsibility for their visit to the farm in the hopes of a let-off, but the cops won’t budge. If Martha wants to get anywhere, she’s going to have to sweet-talk the bank into dropping all charges, and given the fact of her previously telling its manager where to stick his rule book, this will be no mean feat. Little does she know that she’s about to pay a visit to the very same bank being targeted by George and shady mate Colin.Proving his worthMartha’s not the only one hoping for an act of good will from the bank. It’s that morning that Irene and Geoff, desperate to recover the farm, manage to secure a deal: the manager proposes a private sale of the land to cover the outstanding mortgage. The only catch is that they have by close of business that day to come up with the grand sum of $250 000. While Geoff can’t help but blame himself for the outcome, thinking back to the losses he caused Bruce when he poisoned the sheep, Michael impresses both Irene and Alf by attempting a quick sale of his own property to cover the cost – and for only a fraction of its real value. Although unsuccessful, it’s clear that Michael’s managed to redeem himself to some of his staunchest critics, even arranging for Annie and Geoff to legally reclaim some of their belongings, as well as giving a home to their beloved dog.The heist

Meanwhile, it hasn’t escaped Jack’s notice that George seems to be stalling as they prepare to continue their shift. All becomes clear when news of an armed robbery comes in; the pair conveniently being closest to the target, the local bank, George insists on making his way in to investigate, leaving Jack to stand guard outside until backup arrives.

Being a setup, it’s no sooner than he enters the building that George is taken hostage by Colin and the pair head off to a side room to discuss tactics – neither of them realising that Martha is privy to their conversation.

Things take a shocking turn when, the manager having been forced into unlocking the safe, they escape with the money and, as they clamber into a car at the back of the building, George decides to try disposing of his accomplice. As the crooked cop prepares to make his getaway, he wheels round to see that Jack’s witnessed the attack, and promptly shoots him. Will he survive?
