Dot is praying for guidance – she feels lost. Jim tells Bradley that he’s worried about Dot so he’s taking her out for the day. Dot agrees to look after Janet for the day. Dot tells Jim they can go for a drive any day but Jim gets angry – he has organised a treat for Dot. Bradley volunteers to look after Janet but Billy slopes off. Jim and Dot set off on their day trip – the air is full of tension until Jim reveals they are going to the hop-picking fields (where they used to go in their youth). Dot thinks about her old friend Margot who lived near-by and asks Jim if they could go and visit her. She sees a church she used to visit with Margot and insists that they stop. Dot enters the church and meets the vicar. She comments on the modern wall hangings and reminisces about the vicar she had known. The vicar shows Dot Margot’s grave. The vicar tells Dot that Margot’s son, Douglas, is currently clearing out Margot’s house. Dot and Jim visit Douglas who reveals he is no longer a vicar. Jim heads off for a stroll to let Dot and Douglas talk. An upset Dot shares her beliefs with Douglas. He apologises for his behaviour. Dot doesn’t want talk about religion anymore – she comments that Douglas used to be a lovely little boy, perhaps Satan has got a hold on him. They begin to argue. Douglas immediately apologises but Dot turns and flees. Jim sits in the pub and pontificates to the landlord about religion. Dot enters, sniffing back tears and tells him that she wants to get out of here. Jim comforts Dot after her fight with Douglas – she wants ten minutes in the church by herself. Jim is concerned but she heads to the church passing Anya coming the other way. Dot prays, asking God if she has been a bad mother. She hears a baby crying, looks around and finds a baby boy in a hold all under the ‘Asylum Welcome’ display with a note saying that his name is Tomas. She remembers seeing Anya outside, picks up the baby and rushes outside. Dot asks Jim if he saw a woman but Jim wasn’t paying attention. He is shocked when Dot puts the baby in the car and rushes back to the church. Dot pins a note to the display saying that she has Tomas and giving her name and address. Jim thinks that Dot is having one of her turns but Dot can’t leave the baby. She tells Jim that she’s left their address so his mother will know where to find him. She explains to Jim that God has given her a second chance with this baby. Jim wants to go to the police but Dot tells him just to drive. Dot looks at Tomas – utterly enraptured…Bradley babysits Janet, but when she wakes up crying, Bradley doesn’t know what to do so he feeds her some chocolate and she is instantly quiet.
