Julie Hesmondhalgh drank whisky while watching her Coronation Street exit.
The 43-year-old actress is devastated about quitting the ITV soap after playing transgender fan favourite Hayley Cropper for 16 years and had to binge on booze to get through watching her tear-jerking final scenes.
According to The Sun newspaper, she said: "Me and my husband [Ian Kershaw] watched it and it was like a scene of carnage at the end. There was loads of kitchen rolls screwed up and empty whisky bottles around us."
Hayley, struck with terminal pancreatic cancer, will decide to end her own life on next Monday's episode (20.01.14) as she lies next to her beloved husband Roy Cropper [David Neilson] in what looks set to be one of the show's most controversial storylines.
Julie explained: "We wanted to make it awkward because right until the end, even though Roy had told Hayley he agrees with her decision, he doesn't."
And while euthanasia might be a tough subject to deal with, Julie says she can sympathise with her kind-hearted character's decision and would have done the same.
She said: "I wouldn't want to live in that pain and anguish, or see family and friends go through it. I always understood Hayley's decision.
"Everyone has been affected by cancer and the overwhelming response is that people are finding some sort of solace in Hayley's experience and Roy's loss."
