Coronation Street has found itself at the centre of much controversy when it comes to their ongoing grooming storyline, involving Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon). Whilst many think it’s important to shine a light on the topic of grooming, others think the storyline has gone too far. Whatever the case may be, it’s one that’s going to run on for quite some time yet.

Manipulated by her fiancé Nathan (Christopher Harper), Bethany has found herself raped by one of his seedy friends, with it looking like she’s going to be ‘pimped out’ to more people as the story rolls ahead.

Speaking to the Press Association, Fallon explained: “Things get loads worse, they really do. In the next few weeks you will start to see things get worse and worse. You will see this goes on for a bit. I think we know it’s going on through the summer until the autumn and we know the end.

“I’ve known how it was going to end because I’ve been speaking to [producer] Kate [Oates] about how it’s going to pan out. We got a say in how it’s going to end, the NSPCC got a say too, it’s been really good, everyone has given their advice. I think it’s going to be a really good ending.”

She went on to admit that one of the recent scenes, in which Bethany was sexually assaulted by a friend of Nathan called Neil, was something she had to watch on her own.

“I didn’t watch it when it was on, I watched it later on my own,” she said. “It was harder to watch than to film. When we filmed it it was done in about 20 minutes, the director was really quick and sensitive.”

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
