Randy Jackson

Randy Jackson is giving up his spot on American Idol after a long period on the show.

The producer stepped down as judge last year but is returning to the current season as an in-house mentor, "proud" of his stint on the show but ready to move on to something new.

In a statement he explained: "After 13 seasons, I felt now was the perfect time to leave 'American Idol'.

"I'm proud to have been a a part of a series that discovered some incredible artists and will go down in history as one of the most successful television shows ever. A true original, 'Idol' started it all. Onto what's next."

Whilst he'll no longer be a main presence on the series, producers hope he'll still "visit" from time to time.

Show executives have thanked Randy for his time helping the acts throughout its run from 2002 to now, as he's the only person aside from Ryan Seacrest to have been there from day one.

Fox, FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment said: "Randy has been such an integral part of 'American Idol' since day one, both as a judge and as a mentor.

"He's provided great advice and support, shaping the success of so many Idols we have discovered over the years.

"We wish him all the best in his next chapter. Randy will always be part of our 'Idol' family, and we hope he'll visit from time to time."
