“American Idol” Now I know I said it was the end of season 10 for me following Toscano's elimintaion last week, but hey I have relented more to see if the judges would start giving guidance, whether or not the voting patterns would change and so on. Well after weeks this Thursday finally produced a guys elimination.
Paul McDonald became the first of the six “Idol” men to be shown the door. The Rod Stewart tribute act had been praised nearly every week for his unique voice, but a forgettable vocal of “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll” not enough to keep him in the contest.
McDonald had started Wednesdays show, never a great slot, with “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll” by Bob Seger recieving praise in particular from Randy Jackson who gushed afterwards. But to be honest Jackson must have been watching another show as McDonalds vocals were weak and instantly forgetable.
In his defence his version of Stewart’s “Maggie May” for his final song was much better but a Stewart tribute act would be better with a Stewart song.
Langone was also in the bottom three a place where following his wild card save he has remained for three of the past four weeks.Stefano Langone picked Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” an irony that would not have been lost on former Idol judge Simon Cowell who would have certainly linked the title with Langone’s probable fate.
Though for the first time no woman got the boot,Idol could not resist putting one woman in the danger zone and Haley Reinhart was the lucky one to claim this honour.
Reinhart had covered Blondie’s “Call Me” and in a rare occurance the judges actually gave some negative feedback but only a bit. Reinhart though always appears at home on the stage but the performance had lacked something with Ms Lopez commenting “I'm so afraid to say anything about any of the girls because I don't want the girls to go home.” Then again she still managed to drip complimants on all the guys performances.
Elsewhere in the competition Casey Abrams and James Durbin were safe after confident displays, Abrams did Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy,” while Durbin, covered Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal” from the movie of the same name.
Teen favorite Scotty McCreery took George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart.” another country song and put in his usual top performance which assured him a return next week. Lauren Alaina after mentor Iovine compared her to Miley Cyrus and though her cover of “The Climb.” was a touch forced again passed the test.
Jacob Lusk's version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel again was OK somewhat screachy in parts but it had been one of the better performances of the previous night.
