Zara McDermott doesn't see herself as a reality star any more.
It's been five years since the former Department for Education policy advisor shot to fame competing on ITV dating show 'Love Island' back in 2018 and she's gone on to present a number of BBC documentaries as well as landing a slot on the new series of TV talent show 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
Her inclusion in the line-up made headlines as it was previously thought BBC bosses had deliberately excluded reality stars from competing in 'Strictly', but Zara says there was never a ban plus she's convinced she has stepped "out of that box".
She told reporters: "I know obviously I am the first 'Love Island' contestant to do it, but I don't think there was ever specifically a ban for it. I just think that maybe the show wanted someone who had ventured out of that box, really. But look, I'm really proud of my background and where I've come from because I've grown so much and done so many things, so it does feel absolutely incredible.
"But also at the same time you know I don't see myself that much as like a reality person anymore, with the work I do now."
Zara went on to insist her boyfriend Sam Thompson is not worried about her taking part in the show following years of speculation about the 'Strictly' curse as so many celebrities have split from their partners after taking to the dance floor.
When asked if Sam is nervous about the curse, she replied: "No, no, not at all! I think look, everyone on this show who has got a partner is super supportive and everybody's going to be in the audience."
She added of her training: "It's been some of the best days ever, all of us non stop smiling, grinning from ear to ear just having the best time. All getting to know each other as well, this is such a special time for us."
