The 89-year-old actor has played the part of Ken Barlow in the ITV soap since December 1960, making him the longest-serving male TV star in a continuous role, and Bill has insisted he doesn't have any intention to ever walk away from the show.

The veteran star told The Sun newspaper: "I am happy to stay until they write me out – or carry me out. I like being a part of the 'Coronation Street' family and success story, so I have no plans to call it a day."

William would actually love to see Ken celebrate his 100th birthday on the soap.

He explained: "Wouldn’t it be good if one day the scriptwriters could add in a piece about Ken Barlow receiving his 100th birthday telegram from The Queen?"

William previously insisted that ageing is all in the mind.

The soap star suggested that his positive outlook is helping him to turn back the clock.

He explained: "I’m getting younger every day. A lot of it is just belief.

"It’s a collective consciousness, ‘Oh I am too old for this’. It’s all in the mind. I wasn’t joking when I said I was getting younger every year.

"If you think positively, your cells will renew themselves all the time. If you go down, the renewal process will go down. If you stay up, the renewal process will go up.

"You don’t have to age as much as people think. I’m not, anyway."

William added that he feels 30 years younger than his real-life age.

He said: "I feel like I’m in my fifties. Inside, I feel like I always did."
