The eighth series of the crime drama came to an end last night (28.01.18) but fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Brenda Blethyn - who plays Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope - has confirmed they'll be back next year with another instalment.

Taking to her Twitter account shortly after series eight concluded, the 71-year-old actress said: "VERA fans. It's official. We will be making series 9. Yaaaaa!! (sic)"

And Brenda can't wait to get stuck into filming the next batch of episodes.

She said after she was bombarded with praise on the social networking site: "Thanks for all the lovely tweets about Vera series 8. Looking forward to making series 9."

Some fans have called for there to be more than one series a year but Brenda has said that would never happen because it takes at least a month to film just one episode.

She replied: "It takes a month to film one episode at up to 15 hours a day and then a couple of months post production.

"Each episode is feature length. Phew!!! And it goes by so quickly. (sic)"

But she's willing to get as many people as possible involved in the next instalment.

'Emmerdale' producer Duncan Foster wrote to her: "congratulations ! I'm a Director that lives in the north -east. I would love to be involved. Don't ask you don't get. ! (sic)"

And she replied: "I'll definitely pass your interest on. Especially as you're endorsed by the BRILLIANT Connor McIntyre! (sic)"

'Vera', which first hit television screens on ITV in 2011, sees DCI Vera Stanhope - a middle-aged employee of the fictional Northumberland & City Police - investigate murders in a "dishevelled state" while battling her own demons.
