The sitcom - which follows the antics of a Scottish suburban cul de sac and stars Elaine C Smith, Arabella Weir, Jamie Quinn, Alex Norton and Graeme Stevely - will air nationally for the first time on primetime across the UK after running on BBC Scotland for the first six seasons.

The smash hit attracted 2.8 million viewers for its latest festive edition across all forms - including iPlayer - in the first 30 days, representing the highest audience ever since its 2013 debut.

Before this, its most recent season - which took fans back to Dumbarton - kicked off in November and saw Siobhan Redmond appear as Anne-Marie, the new love interest of Colin after Doon Mackichan, who played his diva girlfriend, departed the show.

Gregor Sharp and Simon Carlyle, the show’s creators, said: “We're excited to be spreading our wings and lowering the tone as we introduce BBC One audiences to life in Latimer Crescent."

Josh Cole, the BBC’s comedy boss and Steven Canny, an executive producer at BBC Studios added: “We couldn’t be more proud of the success story that is ‘Two Doors Down’.

"It’s an absolute joy to work on and loved by a large loyal fanbase that have embraced these families and neighbours as though their own over the years! We can’t wait to get going on series seven and look forward to the move to BBC One.”

The public broadcaster’s Director of Comedy Commissioning Jon Petrie said: “Two Doors Down continues on its understated march towards classic BBC sitcom status with the last series pulling in some of its highest viewing figures to date.

“We’re delighted to be doing more and are excited to see the show move to BBC One for a whole new legion of fans to enjoy.”
