The 32-year-old actor - who plays Andre, the son of Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson's characters Lucious and Cookie Lyon - is allegedly keen to depart the TV drama series because he wants to be a "Shakespearean actor".

An insider told the New York Post: "Trai wants out.

"He feels that he studied at Yale and he's a 'true thespian' ... The character is beneath him. He has an idea of himself as being this big Shakespearean actor.

"At first, being on 'Empire' was major for him. But he feels his character is not as important this season, and he hates not being the star."

Despite this, a source close to 'Empire' insists Trai is not departing the programme - which he has starred in for the first two series - or being sacked.

They said: "It's the last week of filming the season, and he's not quitting, nor is he being fired, for now."

The publication couldn't reach the actor for comment.

Last July, Trai popped the question to his 'Empire' co-star Grace Gealey, who plays Anika Calhoun in the show, on her birthday.

A source said at the time: "He surprised her on her birthday.

"He popped the question and she was totally surprised and elated. She can't stop looking at the ring! They celebrated all night."

The couple were joined at Grace's birthday celebrations in Chicago by several of their 'Empire' co-stars and had an "unforgettable" night.
