The 50-year-old actor's relationship with Kerry Bradley - with whom he has two children - collapsed in 2013 after 20 years together, and months later Tom embarked on a relationship with Jessica Raine, who he married in 2015 and had a child with last month.
The 'Mr. Selfridge' star has now admitted that his past experiences helped him deliver a "successful" performance as Adam Dale, the two-timing husband of Katherine Kelly's character Dr. Leah Dale in ITV's new psychological thriller.
Speaking to Radio Times magazine, he said: "I was very conscious of that when I picked up the script. If you understand the map, if you know how that feels, you're going to bring something of that to the part.
"You draw on your experiences and choose moments from your life that resonate with your character.
"Part of your job is to help people understand what emotions people go through in any given situation so, inevitably, someone who can access it and understand it, is going to, perhaps, do that more successfully than someone who can't."
The new four-part drama will see Katherine's university lecturer alter-ego lock horns with a student - Rose, played by Molly Windsor - she thinks is guilty of plagiarism, which the other woman denies.
The former 'Coronation Street' star previously admitted she will not worry about the programme's ratings once the show hits the small screen.
She said: "You can never predict the popularity of a show and I actually feel like it's none of my business how well it does.
"We're not interested for us as actors about how this is going to come out. We're not thinking: 'Yeah, I'm going to look really sexy in this.' "
