Fans of FOX's The X-Files are happy to know that the show will be revived at the start of next year with a brand new six-episode season, with short teasers and intriguing imagery only whetting the appetite of those anxiously awaiting the debut.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are reprising their legendary roles as Mulder and Scully, with Chris Carter back as creator and showrunner, but now two new names have been added into the mix.

The Flash's Robbie Amell and Six Feet Under's Lauren Ambrose have joined the cast, currently filming in Vancouver in the roles of Agent Miller and Agent Einstein respectively.

Further cast additions that have previously been announced include Joel McHale as a conservative news anchor who'll become an unlikely ally to Mulder, and Kumail Nanjiani.

These names could help bridge the generation gap both on the show and for its audience, which is likely to be made up of hardcore fans coming back to see the originals and newbies wanting to know what all the fuss is about.

Carter has himself already confirmed how X-Files will address just how much the world has changed since it was last on air.

He said: "The X-Files ended right after 9/11. A lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection. We're being spied on now, we're being lied to - all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we're in similar and much more dire times right now."

The X-Files returns with a two-night premiere airing Sunday January 24 in America at 10pm on FOX.
