Every single character we see in The Walking Dead has been through a lot of chaos, upset and drama during their fight for survival in a world overtaken by the zombie apocalypse. That fight perhaps became the most difficult upon the beginning of the show’s seventh season, when latest Big Bad, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) made his presence felt by not only taking out one, but two of the show’s leading cast in Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun). Asserting his dominance, viewers saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) pushed to his breaking point and actually succumb to the powerful force of Negan and The Saviors, dropping to his knees and promising to faithfully serve the tyrannical group.
Now though, the start of the resistance is upon us, as Rick and his fellow group of survivors begin to strategise against some incredibly huge odds. Whilst there’s been an agreement made between The Saviors and those who are living in the Alexandria Safe Zone, that’s about to be broken as plans and foundations are laid for an uprising that the group hope will see Negan killed and The Saviors overtaken. If Rick’s group are to stand any chance of winning their upcoming battle, however, they’re going to have to find other communities to stand alongside them.
Showrunner Scott M. Gimple says in the above preview: “The first half of season seven was very much about these characters and the audience finding their way forward from an incredible trauma.”
Actor Andrew Lincoln adds: “[This season started] with a man being bedient, going out of his way and risking his life for Negan in order to preserve life in Alexandria. But throughout there are successions of moments that change his mind and it makes him realise that this is an untenable situation.”
Of course, with actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan already confirmed to return for The Walking Dead season eight, we can expect this battle to be a long-lasting one that’s going to span a whole string of new episodes.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC in the US on Sunday, February 12 and returns to FOX in the UK the day after on February 13.
