The Walking Dead may not have picked up the best reviews for its seventh season, but it’s certainly still one of the most popular television shows available, with the incredible ability to get people speaking every week about the goings on of the zombie apocalyptic series.
Through season 7, viewers got to learn a little more about the show’s current Big Bad, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who’s going up against Rick and his fellow group of survivors, first forcing them to feed his band of Saviors and now gearing up for ‘All Out War’.
Now in a chat with ComicBook.com, executive producer Scott M Gimple has said that Rick and Negan are actually very similar, with their “philosophies” being the main difference between the two.
He explained: “I think if we followed Negan, we might even be in the same place that we are with Rich where we’re like, ‘Whoa. What you’re doing there seems like the behaviour of a bad person.’
“What’s interesting is, I think for Rick’s experience, he’s justified in what he’s doing. The world has formed him this way, and what he’s done has generally been a reaction to being threatened and trying to make sure his people live.
“Things are getting greyer and greyer and greyer. But I think the things that Rick has done, you can hold up against the things that Negan has done and it’s not a vast gulf between those two, but the way that they operate is very different.
“Their philosophies are very different, and that’s maybe where we see one person being the hero and one person being the villain.”
The Walking Dead is expected to return in the fall to AMC in the US and FOX in the UK for season 8.
