The 39-year-old professional dancer was impressed with the response from viewers last year when boxer Nicola Adams and her professional partner Katya Jones made history as the first same-sex couple to compete on the BBC One Latin and ballroom competition, and she'd love to get the chance to hit the dancefloor with a female star herself.

She told Hello magazine: “A same-sex partner would be incredible.

“The support behind Strictly’s first same-sex couple last year was extraordinary.

“I can only imagine our wonderful viewers this year would support it just as much, if not more.”

Karen - who joined the show in 2012 - is set to be part of the line-up later this year, meaning she'll become the longest-serving female professional on the programme, and Karen admitted she has never felt more "confident" as herself as she does today.

She said: “I’m more confident in myself than I was back in 2012 and I’m sure of who I am as a person, as a woman in this industry."

The World Mambo Champion has previously been paired up with the likes of Jamie Laing, Jeremy Vine, and Mark Wright.

Confirming her return to 'Strictly' this year in a previous Instagram post, she said: "I am absolutely bursting with pride and happiness that I can now announce I am confirmed for my TENTH series of @bbcstrictly .

"I don’t talk too much on here like this but I’m beyond overwhelmed to say that I’m now officially the longest running female pro on the best show on the planet [lightening emoji] .

"I have adored every celebrity partner I’ve worked with. We’ve laughed, we’ve worked our butts off, we’ve danced for the nation and we’ve had fun every step of the way.

"Thank you to every single Strictly Come Dancing supporter for the love you pour into this show year on year. We do this for you [heart emoji] (sic)"
