'Strictly Come Dancing' bosses are "determined" to put on a full 13-show series this year, after the programme was cut by four episodes in 2020.

Head judge Shirley Ballas has revealed the BBC are looking for the Latin and ballroom show to return to its full complement of episodes after four were axed last year to ensure the programme could go ahead amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to a fan on celebrity messaging app Cameo, she said: "Just a little something: I heard they’re trying to do all 13 episodes this year.

"Last time we had nine. We’re trying to get 13 shows on. I think they’re getting used to the COVID thing."

And 'Strictly' bosses are hoping they can return to 13 shows because there is more time to plan for the series later this year.

A TV insider told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column: "That 'Strictly' was able to go ahead at all last year, given that it’s not exactly easy to pull off a dance routine two metres apart, is a testament to the production team.

"In 2020, concessions had to be made to get the green light.

"Now the team know they can put on a series in a time of COVID, and they have more time to plan, they’re determined to avoid compromising the show."

It's not yet known which contestants will appear on this year's show, but one person who knows about coronavirus protocols is Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam - and 'Strictly' pro Janette Manrara recently backed calls for him to star in the 2021 series.

She said: "If we had Ed Balls, we've had Ann Widdecombe then why not. Bring him on.

"I feel like he could be really good in ballroom because he's quite elegant.

"And he's quite tall, but definitely taller than me so I know I'm out of the picture straight away.

"I think I would put him with Nadiya, because she's a classy, beautiful woman. She'll take him through all the ballroom really lovely.

"She's a gorgeous ballroom dancer."
