Simon Cowell has told Nigel Harman to "be a d**k" to portray him accurately in 'I Can't Sing!'.

The former 'EastEnders' actor will play the 53-year-old music mogul in the upcoming 'X Factor' musical, and while Simon has tried not to get involved in the content of the production, he believes the 'Downton Abbey' star should act like a fool to ensure his portrayal is true to life.

When asked if he had any tips for Nigel on how to play him, he said: "Just be a d**k every night.

"I try not to be too involved because this is not something I have ever done before.

"I want them to feel they have got free rein to do pretty much what they would like, otherwise it is going to feel a bit too censored."

Simon admits he thought the musical would be terrible when he was first told about the idea by comedian Harry Hill - who has written the show - but after watching a performance he completely changed his opinion and fell in love with the project.

He added to The Times newspaper: "To be honest I thought it would be absolutely dreadful.

"I said to my PA, 'Just give me two seats by the nearest exit in case it's dreadful and I can leave.'

"Within about 10 minutes, I relaxed. I thought it was really funny, very well observed and not a puff piece.

"I get it full on throughout the whole show. If it took myself too seriously this project would never have gone ahead.

"I knew with Harry as the writer I was going to get a lot of stick but it is done in quite an affectionate way. I never want to take myself or the show too seriously."
