The first series of the popular US sitcom - which is executive produced by Elizabeth Banks and features 'Saturday Night Live' star Aidy Byrant as Annie and Lolly Adefope as her best friend and roommate Fran - is coming to the Beeb after the channel acquired the UK rights from Warner Bros. Television.

The show - which will be available as a box set on iPlayer from December 15 - follows Annie, an overweight young woman wanting to change her life but not her body.

She is trying to start a career while juggling bad relationships, a sick parents and a perfectionist boss as she tries to figure out what it is she really wants.

Meanwhile, an internet troll tries to drag Annie's self esteem down as she defiantly hits back to promote body positivity and shines a light on being a larger woman in the modern world.

Sue Deeks, BBC's head of programme acquisition, said: "Annie is such a relatable and engaging character, I am sure that BBC Three viewers will enjoy watching her navigate her way through life with warmth, humour and increasing confidence."

The cast is completed by Luka Jones (Ryan), Ian Owens (Amadi), John Cameron Mitchell (Gabe) and Patti Harrison (Ruthie).

The show was inspired by Lindy West's 'Shrill: Notes From A Loud Woman'.

A second series of 'Shrill' has already been commissioned in the US after a successful first run.
