The 'Strictly Come Dancing' head judge - who was married to ballroom dancers Sammy Stopford from 1980 to 1984, and then Corky Ballas from 1985 to 2007 - went ring shopping with West End star Danny, 48, earlier this year, and he is said to have asked the 61-year-old star's mum Audrey Rich, 84, for permission to wed her daughter.

A source said: "Shirley and Danny are blissfully loved-up - almost irritatingly so!

"They actually went ring shopping earlier this year and, after Shirley spotted one she liked, Danny went and bought it.

"Shirley is quite traditional, and definitely wants Danny to get down on one knee and do the proposing - after asking her mum for her blessing first.

“But Danny obviously wants it to be a surprise.

“And also, understandably, he doesn’t want to feel pressurised into anything before he’s ready."

However, Shirley and Danny are not said to be in a rush to tie the knot.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: "Neither of them are in any hurry and they’re really happy taking things day by day.

"Shirley and Danny are both just happy in the knowledge they’ll marry one day.

"But it is very much a question of when, not if."

In October, Shirley revealed Audrey - who previously had colon cancer - was moving in with her and Danny.

She said: "My mother was diagnosed with cancer about three years ago, which is under control. But she just informed me, ‘I think I’m ready to move in with you, darling … I’ve had enough of this housework.'

“She’s been such a huge part of my life. I couldn’t think of anything more exciting.

"She said, ‘I’m a bit worried about what Danny will think?’

“I said, ‘Well I love him dearly but it’s not about what he thinks, it’s about what you want.' I’m honoured she chose not to go into a facility, and has chosen to live with me.”
