Shazad Latif is currently starring as Lt. Ash Tyler in brand new sci-fi series Star Trek: Discovery. Airing on CBS All Access in the United States and available around the world on Netflix (excluding the US and Canada), the show has instantly found success with the critics and viewers alike, who praise it for its brilliant storytelling and take on the world-renowned franchise.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Latif was asked about whether there would be major character deaths throughout the series, to which he replied: “I think so, yeah. I mean, that’s what most shows do now.”
He continued: “You keep the audience on tenterhooks. You never know. You want to build these relationships with these characters, and it just makes it all the more heartbreaking when they go. I mean, yeah, I think you’re never safe.”
Also asked about the relationship the character shares with series lead Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), he said the two have “chemistry”, and “they’re both going through some things.”
“So they’re trying to help each other find who they are,” he explained. “They could find some solace in each other. That’s all I can say!”
Though viewers haven’t yet met his character, he teased of the future: “He’s a very skilled security officer. He’s a prisoner of war. That’s how we meet him, with Jason Isaacs [as Captain Lorca] and Rainn Wilson [as Harry Mudd].
“They’re three very different characters, and you don’t really know why they’re there. It’s just a great episode.”
Exactly where the show goes from here remains to be seen, but with the tensions between Starfleet and the Klingon race reaching an all-time high, we can imagine that the drama and chaos won’t be decreasing at any point in the near future…
Star Trek: Discovery continues on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK and beyond.
