13 Reasons Why is without a doubt one of Netflix’s most successful original series of all time, but that doesn’t mean the show has come without its criticism. Blasted by many suicide awareness groups and others in the professional field, the story follows the late Hannah Baker, who left behind a series of cassette tapes explaining exactly why she took her own life.
Working as an executive producer on the show, Selena Gomez admitted she had always expected a backlash once the series (based on Jay Asher’s novel of the same name) aired.
Speaking to the Associated Press, she explained: “We stayed very true to the book, and that’s initially what Jay Asher created, a beautifully tragic yet complicated and suspenseful story.
“I think we wanted to do it justice, and (controversy) is gonna come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing and I’m overwhelmed and very proud of it.”
Labelled “risky” and “distressing” by various groups, Paris Jackson even stepped out to advise against watching the series if you’re somebody struggling with mental health issues.
New Zealand’s Office of Film and Literature Classification have also banned underage teens and children from watching the show without adult supervision.
13 Reasons Why season 1 is available in its entirety now on Netflix.
