Penny Dreadful isn't about to get any lighter or easier to watch when it returns for its third season if the new teaser trailer for the series is anything to go by.
'Embrace your dark side', implores the teaser, whilst showing little glimpses into the paths each of the characters will be taking.
For the first time, the show will be taking a trip across the globe on-screen, with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Brona/Lily (Billie Piper), Victor (Harry Treadaway) and Caliban (Rory Kinnear) all enjoying what different countries may offer them.
Striking images throughout include Vanessa bathing in blood, dreaming of being reunited with Ethan, whilst Caliban finally looks to be getting close to a woman after yearning for his true love since the day he first returned to London.
The official synopsis for the season reads: "This season on Penny Dreadful, Tony Award-winning star Patti LuPone, who guest-starred last season as the Cut-Wife, returns as a series regular in the new role of Dr. Seward, an American therapist who treats Vanessa with an unconventional new approach.
"Wes Studi joins as a series regular as Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm.
"The third season also adds Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Henry Jekyll. Other guest stars include Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Christian Camargo as Dr. Alexander Sweet, a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa; Sam Barnett as Dr. Seward's mysterious young secretary; and Jessica Barden as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily and Dorian Gray, and Perdita Weeks as Catriona Hartdegan, a scholar with expert knowledge of the supernatural.
"Simon Russell Beale returns as Dr. Ferdinand Lyle. Rory Kinnear and Harry Treadaway also star."
Penny Dreadful season 3 debuts in the US on Sunday, May 1 at 10pm ET/PT on Showtime, and will follow in the UK on Sky Atlantic later in the year.
