The Walking Dead season 8 showrunner Scott Gimple has admitted that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) could be on her way out of the show when the current season comes to an end. Whilst it’s not something those working behind-the-scenes would like to see, the offers coming her way just aren’t interesting her enough to stick around, if recent reports are to be believed.
Speaking with TVLine, the show boss explained that negotiations were still ongoing and when asked if Cohan may be leaving, Gimple said: “These things do happen in TV. But we’re talking. Lauren is an actor who has such intuition and such power. Hopefully, it all works out.”
Cohan will not only be looking at the offers on the table from AMC to continue in the long-running zombie drama, but is said to be fielding a number of different offers for new television pilots.
In the Walking Dead comic book series, Maggie is a major player and a character that’s still alive to this day. Of course, that hasn’t stopped big decisions being made by showrunners on the series in the past from taking risks. It was in the season 8 midseason finale that we saw Chandler Riggs’ character Carl Grimes dealing with a zombie bite to the abdomen. His death will be a huge deviation from the story being told on the pages of Robert Kirkman’s comic series.
If Maggie is also on the way out, we’re sure fans will be very unforgiving. We’re going to have to wait and see how this one plays out…
The Walking Dead returns for the second half of season 8 on Sunday, February 25 on AMC in the US and Monday, February 26 on FOX in the UK.
