The 'Emmerdale' actress was left "astounded" how horrible some social media users can be while she was on the micro-blogging site over the weekend, and the soap star has decided to take some time out.

She tweeted: "Having a wee break from the vitriolic place Twitter is today! It astounds me how nasty people are. See you in a while."

It came after the 50-year-old actress - who plays Bernice Blackstock in the ITV soap - had questioned whether people were "mad" when she experienced a lack of social distancing and mask wearing during a day out in Blackpool on Saturday (17.07.21).

She wrote: "Today we hit Blackpool for the youngests upcoming birthday. God it was mental. And no social distancing, not many masks being worn. Are people mad???? No wonder cases are rising. (sic)"

However, a number of Twitter users didn't agree with her comments.

One wrote: "I was on holiday in Blackpool all week and everybody was following the rules including the hotel we was in (sic)"

Another posted: "I live in Blackpool and this is complete BS ! Blackpool is following ALL the rules and has done throughout! (sic)"

Sam pointed out she was not criticising the seaside resort itself, but merely some of the people visiting.

She replied: "Blackpool might be following the rules but the people visiting clearly aren’t."

But the Twitter user hit back: "Again RUBBISH - I walked the full length if the prom south to north yesterday - everyone was doing the right thing! People need to get back to living as thus covid BS has gone on long enough, and they are doing mostly responsibly! (sic)"

Sam then wrote: "You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. (sic)"
